Halo CME MailHalo CME Mail Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2004 12:30 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Partial Halo CME on 2004/01/06, probably frontsided UCMEO 93001 40106 1630/ 40106 70853 80953 0251/ 170// 323// 31375 40106 ///// ///// ///// ///// ///// 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO observed a partial halo CME on 2004/01/06. The event was first observed in C3 at 08:53 UT as a faint loop front at about 22 Rs above the E limb spanning ~145 deg from PA 25 - 170. SOHO had been in a telemetry keyhole data gap from ~22 UT the previous day and so no earlier data are available, although the trailing material from this CME can clearly be seen in C2 images. The mean plane-of-sky speed for this event was 1375 km/s at PA 82, based only on two data points. The CME was probably associated with an M5.8 X-ray flare which GOES records between 06:13 - 06:36 UT with peak emission at 06:29 UT, located N05E90. EIT was still running a CCD bakeout at the time so no EUV images are available. This event has therefore been determined most probably frontsided. Movies and images of this event will shortly be available at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20040106 Please note that I will be leaving my present position as LASCO operation scientist at the end of this week, and so will not be responsible for the Halo CME reports after that time, my successor, Guillermo Stenborg, will take over that duty as of next Monday, Jan 12th. I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy new year and thank you for your helpful comments over the past three years. Best wishes, Gareth Lawrence. +----------PLEASE NOTE NEW EMAIL ADDRESS-----------+ Gareth Lawrence, grl@grace.nascom.nasa.gov SOHO-LASCO Operations Scientist, CUA, MC 682.3, Bldg 26, Rm 001, F: +1-301-286-0264 NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD 20771.
