Halo CME Mail Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 13:26 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Partial Halo CME on 2002/08/14, frontsided (fwd) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Due to hardware and network problems at GSFC it is possible that the report on yesterday's partial halo CME was not received by all intended recipients. I'm therefore re-sending the report. Apologies to all who receive it twice. Best wishes, Gareth Lawrence. UCMEO 93001 20814 2000/ 20814 60230 90842 2351/ 020// 223// 41155 20814 60200 90312 45710 10061 1222/ 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO and EIT observed a partial halo CME on 2002/08/14. The event was first observed in C2 at 02:30 UT as a bright loop front over the NW limb; by 02:54 UT the front extended from PA 235 to PA 20 in total. The bright central front first appeared in C3 at 02:42 UT with maximal coverage of the C3 occultor by 03:42. The plane of sky speed of the front was measured as 1155 km/s at PA 282 (NW), with a moderate deceleration. The CME was most probably associated with an M2.3 X-ray flare in AR10061 which EIT observed between 02:00 - 02:48 UT with peak emission at 02:24 UT. GOES observed this flare btween 01:46 - 02:48 UT with peak emission at 02:02 UT. Neither an EIT wave nor dimming were observed in association with this event. EIT also observed a CME from AR10066 centred on N14E05 between 02:00 - 02:36 UT and this CME can clearly be seen in LASCO images in the NE of the field of view. Movies and images of this event are available now at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20020814 Best wishes, Gareth Lawrence. ++ | Gareth Lawrence, E-mail:grl@kreutz.nascom.nasa.gov | | SOHO-LASCO Operations Scientist, | | CUA, Mail Code 682.3, | | NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Phone: +1-301-286-2941 | | Building 26, Room 001, +1-301-286-3447 | | Greenbelt, MD 20771.
