Halo CME Mail Date: Mon, 12 Aug 2002 17:53 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Partial Halo CME on 2002/08/09, frontsided ------------------------------------------------------------------------ UCMEO 93001 20812 2300/ 20809 62330 91418 2451/ 045// 123// 40619 20809 62012 92336 40537 ///// 2222/ 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO and EIT observed a partial halo CME on 2002/08/09. The event was first observed in C2 at 23:30 UT as a bright loop front over the N pole; by 00:06 UT faint extensions were visible into the NE and down to the SW though the region over the pole remained quite bright. The front extended from PA 240 to PA 40 in total. The bright central front first appeared in C3 at 00:18 UT with maximal coverage of the C3 occultor by 02:18, though the front is not as bright or apparently wide in C3 as it was in C2. The plane of sky speed of the front was measured as 619 km/s at PA 350 (NP), with a moderate deceleration possible. Note that the leading edge could only be measured out to 20 Rs . The CME was most probably associated with an modest eruptive prominence straddling central meridian, which EIT observed between 20:12 - 23:36 UT. The prominence is most obvious at 22:00 UT spanning from N40E11 - N33W18. On-disk activity was low during this time. Neither an EIT wave nor dimming were observed in association with this event. Movies and images of this event are available now at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20020809 and please note that the LASCO image processing software does not render the EIT event very well.
