Halo CME Mail Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 11:39 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Full Halo CME on 2002/05/16, frontsided ------------------------------------------------------------------------ UCMEO 93001 20516 1630/ 20516 60050 90942 0001/ 360// 223// 40548 20515 62348 90212 21420 09948 1212/ 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO and EIT observed a full halo CME on 2002/05/16. The event was first observed in C2 at 00:50 UT as a faint loop front over the SE limb; by 02:06 UT the C2 occulting disk was surrounded by significantly brighter fronts. The front first appeared in C3 at 01:42 UT with full coverage of the C3 occultor by 03:42 UT. The plane of sky speed of the front was measured as 548 km/s at PA 156 (SE) with slight deceleration through the coronagraphs' fields of view. The CME was most probably associated with an C3.5 X-ray flare in AR9948, which EIT observed between 23:48 - 02:24 UT with peak emission at 00:24 centered on S20E14. GOES observed the flare between 23:44 - 00:06 UT with peak emission at 23:59. Note that the EIT activity described includes the X-ray flare and a significant amount of related dynamical processes in the active region and its immediate vicinity. An EIT wave but no dimming were observed in association with this event, the wave primarily directed towards the E.
