Halo CME Mail Date: Wed, 10 Apr 2002 15:59 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Partial Halo CME on 2002/04/10, frontsided ------------------------------------------------------------------------ UCMEO 93001 20410 2200/ 20410 61327 91842 2601/ 060// 213// 40366 20410 61224 91248 10122 09893 1112/ 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO and EIT observed a partial halo CME on 2002/04/10. The event was first observed in C2 at 13:27 UT as a slow, bright fairly narrow loop front over the NE limb; by 14:06 UT the front spanned ~160 deg from PA 260 (W) to PA 60 (NE) though emission in the N and NW was faint. The front first appeared in C3 at 14:18 UT with maximal coverage of the C3 occultor by 15:18 UT. The mean plane of sky speed of the front was measured as 366 km/s at PA 15 (NE) with a linear profile through the coronagraphs' fields of view, indicating no discernible acceleration. The CME was most probably associated with an M8.2 X-ray flare from the AR 9893/9901 complex that was near disk centre at the time. GOES observed the flare between 12:23 - 12:40 UT with peak emission at 12:31. SEC records the flare from AR9893. EIT observed the flare between 12:24 - 12:48 UT with peak emission at 12:36, centered on N22E01. Both an EIT wave and dimming were observed in association with this event, the dimming largely to the NE of the site of the eruption and the wave primarily to its' NW. Images and movies of this event are available at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20020410 and note that a) there is a distinct and unrelated narrow event in the SW visible in the movies, and b) the N and NW regions of the front does not show up well in the C3 movie and image. You may find that you experience difficulty in accessing the images and movies, as a result of problems with the ftp site and NRL's firewall. If this is the case please try again later as the problem is being worked on.
