Halo CME Mail Date: Tue, 8 Jan 2002 19:38 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: 'Partial Halo' CME on 2002/01/08, limb/backsided event ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LASCO and EIT observed a wide, bright 'partial halo' CME on 2002/01/08. A bright loop front was observed over the E limb in C2 at 17:54 UT, which spanned 180 deg from the N to S poles by 18:54 UT. The front first appeared in C3 at 18:18 UT spanning ~180 deg by 19:42 UT. EIT data clearly show a large, fast CME slightly over the E limb, straddling the solar equator. This CME has therefore been determined a limb/backsided event. Please note that the bright front and core in the N and NW are visible in EIT as a narrow eruptive prominence centered around N55W35. Given its size and apparent source location and direction of propagation we consider the geoeffective potential of this CME to be minimal. For reference, neither CME appeared to propagating in a direction that might possibly lead to an interaction with comet 96P/Machholz. Ratio and running difference movies may be found at http://lasco-www.nrl.navy.mil/rtmovies.html but note that the movies presently suffer from a high degree of 'flicker' due to some images being taken at reduced exposure times. Also please note that I will be away on work-related travel for the next two weeks. All halo CME reports will be handled by Kevin Schenk.
