Halo CME Mail Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2001 18:55 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Partial Halo CME on 2001/11/03 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ UCMEO 93001 11105 2330/ 11103 61210 90430 3411/ 178// 113// 40203 11103 ///// ///// ///// ///// ///// 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO observed a partial halo CME on 2001/11/03. The event was first observed in C2 at 12:10 UT as a very slow, faint loop front over the SE limb and N pole; by 13:35 UT this front spanned ~197 deg around the C2 occulting disk from PA 341 to PA 178. The front first appeared unambiguously in C3 at 14:45 UT with maximal coverage of the C3 occultor by 16:15 UT. The plane of sky speed of the front was measured as 203 km/s at PA 86 (E) with slight acceleration through the coronagraphs' fields of view. EIT was in bakeout mode at this time and so EUV images of the low corona are not available, and it is not possible to say with any confidence whether this event is front- or backsided. However, if the event was indeed frontsided it would almost certainly be overtaken by the 1600+ km/s event the following day to form part of a complex ejecta at 1 AU Images and movies of this event are available at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/2001103a Also, please note there was a typographical error in the earlier report for the full halo CME on 2001/11/04. In that report the co-ordinates of AR9684 at the time of the X1.0 X-ray flare were listed as S17W20; this should read N08W16. These co-ordinates were included correctly in the UCMEO code so the report will not be re-sent. Apologies for the confusion.
