Halo CME Mail Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2001 16:56 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Full Halo CME on 2001/10/25 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ UCMEO 93001 11025 1900/ 11025 61526 81942 0001/ 360// 133// 40884 11025 61448 91536 32017 09672 1112/ 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO and EIT observed a full halo CME on 2001/10/25. The event was first observed in C2 at 15:26 UT as a fast, bright loop front over the SW limb; by 15:50 UT the C2 occulting disk was surrounded. The front first appeared in C3 at 16:18 UT with full coverage of the C3 occultor by 17:18 UT. The plane of sky speed of the front was measured as 884 km/s at PA 200 (SW) with slight deceleration through the coronagraphs' fields of view. The CME was most probably associated with an X1.3 X-ray flare in AR9672 between 14:42 and 15:28 UT with peak emission at 15:02 UT. EIT observed this flare between 14:48 and 15:36 UT, with peak emission at 15:00. SEC places the flare at S17W20. Both an EIT wave and dimming were observed in association with this event. Images and movies of this event are available at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20011025 and note that the loops that can be seen over the N pole, particularly in the C3 movie, are part of an earlier, distinct eveny.
