Halo CME Mail Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 11:55 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Full Halo CME on 2001/10/22 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ UCMEO 93001 11022 1600/ 11022 61506 92042 0001/ 360// 233// 41304 11022 61436 91612 21816 09672 1212/ 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO and EIT observed a full halo CME on 2001/10/22. The event was first observed in C2 at 15:06 UT as a fast, bright loop front over the SE limb; by 15:50 UT the C2 occulting disk was surrounded. The front first appeared in C3 at 15:42 UT with full coverage of the C3 occultor by 16:18 UT. The plane of sky speed of the front was measured as 1304 km/s at PA 123 (SE) with very slight deceleration through the coronagraphs' fields of view. The CME was most probably associated with an M6.7 X-ray flare in AR9672 between 14:25 and 16:02 UT with peak emission at 15:12 UT. EIT observed this flare between 14:36 and 16:12 UT, with peak emission at 15:12. SEC places the flare at S16E18. An EIT wave dimming was observed in association with this event, but no dimming. Images and movies of this event are available at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20011022a Please note that a second halo CME was observed in probably association with the X1.2 X-ray flare from the same active region some hours later. A report on this event is in preparation and will appear shortly.
