Halo CME Mail Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2001 18:22 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Partial Halo CME on 2001/10/03 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ UCMEO 93001 11003 2330/ 11003 60230 91542 0951/ 210// 213// 30360 11003 60113 80236 21015 09641 2111/ 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO and EIT observed a partial halo CME on 2001/10/03. The event was first observed in C2 at 02:30 UT as a bright loop front over the S pole. By 12:30 UT this front spanned some 115 deg over the S pole from PA 95 to PA 210. The front first appeared in C3 at 04:18 UT with maximal coverage of the C3 occultor by 06:41 UT. The plane of sky speed of the front was measured as 360 km/s at PA 180 (S) with a slight acceleration through the coronagraphs' fields of view. The CME was most probably associated with an eruptive filament observed by EIT between 01:13 and 02:36 UT. The N end of the filament appeared to trace into AR9641 centred on S15E10. A sizeable region to the S was perturbed, and an almost simultaneous disturbance may be seen in AR9645 centred on S20W07. Given the span of the CME once it is clearly into the C2 field of view it is possible that the two regions were somehow connected. Bright post-eruption loops may be seen in AR9641 from 02:36. Both an EIT wave and dimming were observed in association with this event; however both were small and localised to AR9641 and its immediate vicinity. Images and movies of this event are available at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20011003 and note that all movies show an ealier and unrelated flare and CME on the E limb.
