Halo CME Mail Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 15:34:37 -0400 (EDT) From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Partial Halo CME on 2001/09/29 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ UCMEO 93001 11001 1930/ 10929 61154 92142 3551/ 210// 113// 30521 10929 61028 81148 10313 09636 1222/ 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO and EIT observed a partial halo CME on 2001/09/29. The event was first observed in C2 at 11:54 UT as a faint loop front in the NE. By 12:30 UT this front spanned some 210 deg over both poles from PA 355 to PA 210. The front first appeared in C3 at 12:42 UT with maximal coverage of the C3 occultor by 14:42 UT. The plane of sky speed of the front was measured as 521 km/s at PA 82 (E) with a slight deceleration through the coronagraphs' fields of view. The CME was most probably associated with an M1.8 X-ray flare in AR9636 between 10:19 and 11:48 UT with peak emission at 11:06. EIT also observed this flare between 10:28 and 11:48, peaking at 10:50. SEC places the flare at N13E03. Neither a dimming nor an EIT wave were observed in association with this event. Bright post-eruption loops are clearly visible from about 12:00 UT. Images and movies of this event are available at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20010929 As a footnote I would like to note that the large fast bright CME seen in LASCO data from 05:30 UT on 2001/10/01 has been determined a limb/backsided event, probably associated with an M9 X-ray flare and eruptive prominence visible in EIT and probably originating from or near AR9632 which has just recently rotated over the W limb. Images and movies of this event are available at ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20011001 Finally, due to hardware problems at GSFC the images and movies of the partial halo CME reported on 2001/09/28 were not available over the weekend. This has now been rectified and the files can be obtained from ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20010928 Best wishes, Gareth Lawrence. ++ | Gareth Lawrence, E-mail:grl@kreutz.nascom.nasa.gov | | SOHO-LASCO Operations Scientist, | | CUA, Mail Code 682.3, | | NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Phone: +1-301-286-2941 | | Building 26, Room G-1, +1-301-286-3447 | | Greenbelt, MD 20771.
