Halo CME Mail Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 16:36:17 -0400 (EDT) From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Full halo CME on 2001/06/24 - probably backsided ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LASCO observed a full halo CME on 2001/06/24. A bright front first appeared in the NE quadrant of C2's field of view at 07:31 UT, and the C2 occultor was surrounded by 07:54. The bright front first appeared in the NE of C3's field of view at 08:18 UT and surrounded the occulting disk at 09:18. The front was still discernible, mainly in the SW, until 17:42. The mean plane-of-sky speed, measured at PA 9, was 658 km/s, with a small deceleration through both fields of view. In the opinion of the LASCO and EIT operations and science teams at GSFC the CME was probably backsided. However, there is a chance it was associated with a short duration flare observed near disk center. GOES recorded a C3.9 flare in AR 9511, N10E11, from 06:32 to 06:37, peaking at 06:35. EIT observed a flare in this region peaking at 06:36. There was no wave or dimming associated with the event, and no other significant activity or disruption on the disk. Hence this event has been determined most probably backsided, with a very small chance of a frontsided origin near disk-center.
