Halo CME Mail Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 17:08 From: Gareth Lawrence Subject: Full Halo CME, 2001/02/28 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ UCMEO 93001 10228 2200/ 10228 61450 92118 0001/ 360// 113// 40296 10228 61325 91424 31207 0//// 3212/ 99999 PLAIN BT LASCO and EIT observed a full halo CME on 2001/02/28. The event was first observed in C2 at 14:50 UT, as a bright loop front over the W limb. At 16:50 this bright front extended from about PA 142 to PA 350, while fainter extensions could be seen around the remainder of the C2 occulting disk. The westerly front first appeared in C3 at 16:42 and the C3 occulting disk was surrounded by 20:18. The plane-of-sky speed of the leading edge through to the edge of the C2 field of view was about 296 km/s at PA 263 (W limb). Please note that at the time of reporting the front was at roughly 13 solar radii, less than halfway through the C3 field of view. The CME was probably associated with an eruptive filament observed near disk center by EIT between 13:25 and 14:24 UT. The center of the region first visibly affected was S07W12 and the greater part of EIT activity appeared somewhat to the W of this, consistent with the first appearance of the CME over the W limb. This site of origin was somewhat to the E of AR 9360 but unconnected to it. Images and movies of this event are available at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20010228.
